We have been told over and over again that getting people to subscribe to our publication is easy. Tell me if this sounds familiar "anyone with the common ability to write a letter can create a successful publication". Needless to say, this is a lie passed around by those trying to sell their information products.
In reality most publishers struggle to surpass the 6,500 subscriber mark. This, in my opinion, is the point at which one could rest comfortably knowing that through proper marketing he/she will develop a comfortable income ($4800-$5200 or more) a month.
For this reason I would like to pass along my top ten surefire methods for growing your subscriber base. If you currently own a publication or are considering starting one, print these steps for future use.
1. If you own a large website, be sure add a sign-up form to your home page. Marketer's have testified that doing so more than doubles their results.
2. Be VISIBLE, list your ezine/newsletter on search engines and in all ezine/newsletter Directories.
3. Advertise your URL or subscribe address in other publications, within your target market. You can do this for free by swapping ad space with other publishers. *TIP* Only approach publishers whose subscriber base is comparable with yours. Don't expect a large publication to trade with you, if your numbers are smaller.
4. Tell-a-friend: Most subscriber's, if really impressed, will recommend your publication to their online acquaintances. I suggest adding a reason for them to do this such as free products, services, contests, etc.
5. Create a button or logo that links to information for subscribing to your publication. People will use these logos to inform their visitors that they appeared in your publication. (these should be given to all advertisers and article owners for display on their website)
6. Submit Articles to other publisher's and add your URL and/or subscribe email address in the resource section. People who like your article will subscribe to your publication.
7. Place all of your Articles on separate webpage, add the proper keywords and submit to the search engines. This will add to your visibility. Add a note recommending visitor's to subscribe to your publication or check out your home page.
8. Trade links with other publisher's. Send an email to other publisher's and see if you can work out a deal. If you word your offer properly, you will find many people finding it hard to say no!
9. Offer Free Contests for new subscribers. People love the opportunity to get something for nothing. Offer the opportunity for your visitors to win something of value for subscribing to your publication such as free advertising space, a free demo of your product or service, etc.
10. Organize a joint venture with other publishers. Offer other publishers the opportunity to add to there subscriber base by joining you in a contest. Here is an example: Create a contest where your new subscribers can potentially win 1 ad spot per ezine (if you have 5 other publishers participating, this would be 5 ad spots). The contest participant must subscribe to all (5) publications to be eligible to enter the contest. Then each publisher advertises this contest in their own publication. You will find that subscribers to the other 4 publications will be joining yours for the ability to participate in the contest. Pending on the size of your "partners" ezines subscriber base, this could generate hundreds of new subscribers for you every week!
